Ask someone where their website is hosted and most cannot tell you. Most who can will name a country, not a route. That is usually fine. It stops being fine on an island whose internet does not travel where the map suggests.
North Cyprus has no cable of its own to Europe and no landing point shared with the Republic of Cyprus, the country most people mean when they say Cyprus. It has no ISO country code either, so most of the tools a network engineer would reach for to check any of this have nowhere to put it. Everything TRNC sends or receives online travels through Turkey first, over two cables most site owners have never heard the names of, and every hosting decision made without knowing that is a guess dressed up as a choice.
The island connects to the internet through exactly two cables
TRNC's international bandwidth runs over two submarine cables, both operated by Türk Telekom: Turcyos-1, laid in the early 1990s, and Turcyos-2, brought online in 2011 carrying roughly 800 Gbps. Both land in Turkey. Neither touches the cable systems the Republic of Cyprus uses to reach Greece and the rest of the EU.
This is not old news being repeated for context. On 5 January 2026, Turkey's government approved and published a new fibre protocol with TRNC's own telecommunications department, and Türk Telekom's chief executive described exactly what it does: it delivers fibre internet to homes and businesses in the TRNC "from Turkey, with submarine cables." The island's connection to the world runs in one direction, and it is still being actively built out in that direction.
That routing decides which servers are actually close
A slow site can have more than one cause. An earlier piece covered why page weight alone stalls a phone on local mobile data. This is a second, independent cause: where the server physically sits, and what cable your request has to cross to reach it.
A server in Frankfurt or Amsterdam looks close on a map of Europe. From North Cyprus, distance on a map is not the number that matters. What matters is how many hops your traffic takes to reach Turkey's exchange points before it goes anywhere else.
Nobody has published a benchmark measured from inside TRNC, so the closest honest comparison uses Istanbul, the mainland city the island's cables actually land near, as a stand in.

But the shape holds: Frankfurt and Amsterdam sit closer on this route than most people assume, and geographic closeness on a map means nothing on its own, since even the Republic of Cyprus, sitting on the same island, comes in slower than Frankfurt once its own routing is accounted for.
Two real data centers already sit on the island
The instinct once you know this is to just host locally instead. That option already exists, and almost nobody seems to know it.
Datumcenter, run by Gigabyte Ltd in Lefkoşa, has offered hosting since 2011, funded originally through an EU grant, and carries ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certification. Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell's data center, opened in 2014 to TIER 3 standard, runs 38 cabinets with room for roughly 684 servers, and already serves institutional customers including banks and ISPs.

One of them still keeps your backups in Turkey
Local hosting is not automatically the fix it sounds like, and the clearest example is one of the two facilities above. Turkcell's own product documentation states plainly that the backup and storage tier of its TRNC virtual server product runs on Plusclouds infrastructure, physically located in data centers in Turkey, not on the island.
That is not a defect. It is a reasonable way to run redundant backups. But it means "hosted in North Cyprus" can quietly mean "partly hosted in North Cyprus," and the only way to know which parts is to ask the provider directly rather than assume the name on the invoice tells the whole story.
Nobody has published a number for how fast any of this actually is
This is worth stating plainly rather than working around. GlobalPing, one of the standard public tools for testing latency from real vantage points, has exactly one node anywhere near Cyprus, and it sits in Larnaca, in the Republic of Cyprus. WonderNetwork's list of test cities has no Lefkoşa, no Girne, no Gazimağusa. Neither has ever had a measurement point inside TRNC.

A CDN can close some of the gap without moving your server at all
One genuinely practical lever does not require moving your server anywhere. Cloudflare has run a point of presence in Istanbul since March 2018, plus a second in Izmir, meaning a CDN can serve cached content from Turkey regardless of where the origin server sits. Fastly, by contrast, has no Turkey or Cyprus presence in its network at all as of this writing. That is a real, checkable difference between two providers a small business might otherwise treat as interchangeable.
A CDN does not fix everything. Dynamic content, and anything that has to hit the origin server directly, still travels the full route. But for a mostly static business site, it is the cheapest lever available, and it costs nothing to check before signing up with either provider.
What to ask before you pick a host
Three questions cut through most of this without needing to understand submarine cable routing yourself.
Where does the provider's nearest edge or point of presence actually sit, and is Turkey on that list. Does "hosted here" mean every part of the service, including backups, or just the parts on the marketing page. And has anyone actually tested load time from a real connection on the island, or is everyone, including the provider, reasoning from a map.
Most hosts and most agencies will not have good answers to all three. That is not necessarily disqualifying. It is a reason to ask before signing, not after.
